Walking to Civita, 5×5

This is a mixed-media painting of the path people take to get to Civita, an ancient Italian village. No cars are permitted, so to get there you either walk or bicycle–although it would be a steep bike ride! I painted this using the same techniques I use to do an on-site street sketch, which means that you will see it all: stray pencil marks, colored pencil, paint marker, and gouache. Although I painted it from a photograph, it’s meant to be loose, informal, and to capture the process of travel sketching.

This painting measures 5 x 5 inches. The paper is high-quality 140 lb watercolor paper measuring 6×6 inches.

Paintings are signed on the back in pencil. Some of my paintings are done on-site, which means that the paper may have slight scuffs or very minor blemishes around the edges or on the back. That’s just part of the process of working outdoors.
