Piazza di San Cosimato, Rome 5×7

I’ve been on a farmer’s market kick lately. Here’s the Piazza di San Cosimato, which operates daily in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood. Although I painted this one from a photo, I tried as much as possible to keep the spirit of a street sketch–quick ink lines, loose structure, bright splashes of color, a few highlights with a white paint pen. This is very much what I would’ve done on-site when I was there at the market, watching people come and go with their shopping bags. This is one of two paintings I made from this scene (the other is gouache).

This is watercolor and ink, drawn with a dip pen and India ink. The paper is high-quality 140 lb watercolor paper measuring 7×10 inches.

Paintings are signed on the back in pencil. Some of my paintings are done on-site, which means that the paper may have slight scuffs or very minor blemishes around the edges or on the back. That’s just part of the process of working outdoors.
